One major advantage of yoga over conventional medicine and therapeutic techniques is its holistic approach.

At one level, yoga impacts the body by regulating the breathing through a series of breathing exercises, together called pranayama.

At another level, it impacts the different organs inside the body by applying pressure on them through a series of physical exercises, called sukshmavyayama.

Yoga helps control diabetes

Yoga helps control and cure diabetes through a series of breathing exercises (pranayama) and physical exercises (sukshmavyayama). Prana means the life-force energy. Breathing is a life-force energy. Ayam means motion with speed. Life can be just sustained when we are breathing normally.

As we speed up breathing through regulated and rhythmic strokes it acts as a revitalizer, rejuvenator and immunity builder.

All yoga exercises - pranayama or sukshmavyayama - are practiced sitting cross-legged on a flat surface. The surface can either be the floor or the bed, with minimal cushioning. The back must be kept straight when the exercises are done seated.

The breathing exercises that constitute pranayama, as well as the sukshmavyayamas, are known to work wonders on the vital organs of our body. To treat diabetes, the pranayama and sukshmavyayama are targeted at the pancreas. The pancreas, which is located alongside our digestive tract, feels the positive impact of pranayama.
