Eczema Symptoms and Treatments

The symptoms of eczema generally vary, based on the type of eczema. However, there are a few common symptoms. These include a prolonged itching sensation, reddening of the skin, swelling of the affected areas in some cases, blistering, and crusting. These are considered the primary symptoms.

If these symptoms are ignored and the eczema is not treated, the secondary symptoms set in. This involves deterioration of the skin condition seen in the primary symptoms. The skin now becomes scaly and thick. It also dries up. The color in certain areas may change, accompanied by loss of hair in these areas.

It is unlikely that all these symptoms appear at the same time for all kinds of eczema. Again, depending on the nature of the eczema it is possible for some combination of these symptoms to appear together. The different eczemas described above will have the primary symptoms described here appearing in different combinations or patterns.

Treatment for Eczema

There is no permanent cure for eczema. Taking proper care of oneself and managing one's immediate environment can ensure that the eczema is kept under control. Besides personal care, medication is also available.

Medication usually involves steroid-based creams that are to be applied on the affected areas. These creams are available in four levels:

  • Mild
  • Moderately potent
  • Potent
  • Highly potent

These should be used after proper consultation with the doctor. Steroids can cause havoc if used without medical supervision. After taking into account all relevant parameters, the doctor can determine which of the four levels of medication you may require.

Besides treatment, the most important step is to ensure that the patient stays away from all forms of irritants that can trigger an eczema flare-up. Once this is taken care of, half the battle is won.
