Weight Loss Surgery

It is clear that dieting is the most popular method people follow in order to lose weight. However, consider this: what if there is a situation where dieting doesn’t really work?

Indeed, it happens many a time that dieting just doesn’t seem to work. Or it could be that dieting may not be the best solution for a particular patient.

There could be different scenarios – maybe the person wanting to diet is not able to do so because of some pre-existing physical condition, i.e. he is not well enough for his body to be able to take the strain and rigor involved in following a strict diet.

Another scenario that people usually see is one where the patient is morbidly obese. Morbid obesity is a stage that calls for drastic action. It is a stage where simple dieting and exercising is no longer enough to cut down the excess weight.

These are just two of the common scenarios we see in the case of obese people trying to shed weight.

Weight loss options other than dieting

So in a situation when the patient is unable to follow a diet and do regular physical activity such as exercising, what are the other options open for consideration?

There are quite a few options available, actually. While surgery is a major option, other options available are weight loss patches, body wraps, health spas, and also supplements that help accelerate the weight loss process. We will discuss the option of surgery in this article.

At the outset, you must understand that surgery is not usually the first choice method for weight loss. Indeed, it is usually one of the last choices, when dieting and all else doesn’t work.

Surgery as an option is exercised only in the case of morbidly obese people, as there exists a chance of these people’s life spans getting shortened due to their excessive weight and the accompanying problems the body faces because of this.

Morbid obesity

The term morbidly obese is used to refer to people who have a BMI of more than 40, i.e. men who are 100 pounds overweight and women who are 80 pounds overweight.

Also, people with a BMI between 35 and 40, who have cardiac problems related to obesity, type 2 diabetes, or other ailments like sleep apnea, are also eligible for gastrointestinal surgery.
