Should the Syndrome be associated with some condition such as arthritis, diabetes or malfunction of thyroid or pituitary glands, these conditions are usually treated first. During this time the affected hand and wrist should be rested for at least two weeks by wearing a splint and by avoiding any activities which aggravate the condition. Any swelling or inflammation can be alleviated by the application of ice-packs.

Possible treatment comes under two main headings; non-surgical and surgical. Patients will be advised by their doctor as to which is the more suitable in their particular case.

Drug therapies

Various drugs can ease the pain of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and their effectiveness varies from patient to patient.

Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs such as Aspirin, Ibubrofen, and other over-the-counter drugs can readily ease the pain in the early stages of the condition.

A doctor might prescribe a diuretic (water pills) to reduce any swelling caused by fluid retention.

Corticosteroids can relieve the pain

Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, taken by mouth or lidocaine which is injected into the wrist, will relieve the pain of the pressure on the median nerve. These provide immediate relief but are useful only in those patients who suffer only occasional or mild pain.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is also useful in some cases.

It is absolutely essential to note that Corticosteroids can be dangerous particularly in those with Diabetes or who might have undiagnosed diabetes. They should never be taken without consulting a doctor.

Physiotherapy has a useful part to play in alleviating the pain of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Acupuncture and Chiropractice have also helped some patients while Yoga might strengthen the wrists.
