Unless a diagnosis is made and treatment begun early on, the median nerve could be permanently damaged. In making a diagnosis the doctor must first exclude the possibility that the symptoms are caused by some other condition such as bursitis or tendonitis or even an undiagnosed fracture, all of which present with similar painful symptoms.

Blood tests can rule out other causes

Fingers are tested for their reaction to stimuli, and the muscles below the thumb are examined for signs of wasting. Blood tests and X-rays are sometimes used if there is a suspicion that arthritis, diabetes or fractures are present.

Pressure might be exerted on the median nerve in the wrist to see if this causes tingling in the fingers or a feeling like an electric shock travelling up the arm.

A test which involves the patient pointing their hands downwards which raises the forearms might be used. The backs of the hands are then pressed together. Th presence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is possible if, within a minute the patient feels tingling or numbness in the fingers.

Electrodiagnostic tests

In more difficult cases diagnosis can be made by electrodiagnostic tests. Electrodes are placed on the hand and wrist. Small electric shocks indicate how fast the nerve transmits impulses.

The extent of the damage to the median nerve can be diagnosed by electromyography. In this procedure a fine needle is inserted into a muscle. The ensuing electrical activity indicates the severity of the damage to the median nerve. Any impaired movement of the median nerve can be detected by ultrasound imaging.

Once a diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has been made, treatment should start as soon as possible to avoid possible damage to the median nerve.
