Rosacea Treatment

There is no permanent cure for rosacea. However, there are treatment options available nowadays that help reduce the intensity and incidence of the condition. Timely medical intervention ensures that the episodes of flushing and other symptoms are minimized and the patient can live a normal life.

Early diagnosis and treatment helps considerably

As with most other ailments or health conditions, getting started early on treatment is the key to minimizing rosacea and possibly even reversing the condition. Anyone who feels they have even one of the symptoms of rosacea, should immediately consult a dermatologist.

Detecting the disease early helps in effective treatment too. One sure thing that early detection and treatment can do is preventing further dilation of the blood vessels of the affected areas. It can also prevent the bumps in the skin from occurring.

Rosacea medications

Medication available for rosacea treatment include topical and oral antibiotics, shampoos, etc. Steroids should be avoided as some of them can cause rosacea, called steroid-induced rosacea.

Topical antibiotics include metronidazole, while oral antibiotics normally given are from the tetracycline stable - doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline, etc. Antibiotics are normally the first medication that a dermatologist will prescribe.

These help reduce the incidence of papule and pus-formation. They can also reduce the degree of redness or flushing to an extent.

Rosacea laser treatment

For people with pronounced redness and papule formation, laser treatment is prescribed. A carbon dioxide laser is prescribed for cases of phymatous rosacea. Normally, however, vascular laser or Intense Pulse Light may be prescribed.
